fixturemate is a web-based software enabling anyone to configure 3D printed fixtures intuitively. A task that can occupy hours in a conventional CAD software - even for an experienced engineer.

Enable your team!

Our solution provides a semi-automated approach to design the fixtures with pre-defined features and routines. Therefore, it is not only faster for experienced designers but also suitable for users without knowhow in CAD software and 3D printing due to its intuitiveness. The software is easy to use and a training session of 2-3 hours is enough to get the hang of it.

The combination of AM and this automated design workflow reduces the costs per fixture significantly but also reduces the lead time drastically. Roll out access across your entire team or organization, lowering the barriers for the scalable deployment of this fantastic 3D printing use case.

The advantages of 3D printing jigs & fixtures

Fixtures are fundamental and crucial elements of any manufacturing process. They are used to hold one or several workpieces in a fixed location securely during various process steps like assembly, bonding, post processing, transport or final quality measurement.

3D printing provides a fast and cost-effective production process especially in the context of low-volumes that are typically given for fixtures and other production aids. Establishing Additive Manufacturing for fixtures results in reduced operational costs, reduced lead times and improved efficiencies of the work floor. Since 3D printing does not require any tooling upfront, tailor-made fixtures can be produced efficiently that serve the respective process step perfectly. The underlying CAD file can be redesigned and reprinted anytime allowing the user to adapt fixtures even last minute or according to any future process iteration.

What kind of 3D printed fixtures are used in the industry?

Assembly Fixtures

Several parts are being held at a specific orientation and a stable position to simplify the connection and mounting process.

Machining Fixtures

Subtracting unwanted material to create a desired shape - via turning, drilling and milling. Stability and holding strong forces are very crucial here.

Measuring Fixtures

Quality control using CMM or CT require fixtures to hold parts in a specific orientation – covering only minimal surfaces.

Bonding & Welding Fixtures

When joining two parts together, it is important that they are oriented and aligned properly and stable.

Inspection Fixtures

Some manufacturing processes or assembly steps require ex-post inspection for accuracy. Go/No-go fixtures are a simple solution here.

Carrier Trays

Sensitive parts must be transported safely from one workstation to another. Custom trays can improve these internal logistic processes.

Tool organization

While working at a workstation, lean tool handling is important. Therefore, a shadow board with a good fitting and a clear structure is vital.

Design workflow

Upload your workpiece

1
The workflow begins with uploading of the workpiece which can be either in .STL or .STEP file format. Using the gizmo control element, you can position or orientate the workpiece in the desired way.

Define the baseplate

2
Choose your preferred style of baseplate which can be either part of the 3D printed model or an existing conventionally manufactured standard component. Some parameters need to be defined such as the width, height, thickness, or the grid of holes.

Create support structures

3
To hold the workpiece, a nest geometry is created by combining various support geometries. Add different support structures to your design such as rectangular and cylindrical shaped pillars by simple key and mouse controls. You can even generate fully custom shaped supports.

Create the negative

4
The central step in the design process is the subtraction of the workpiece from the support structures. The resulting nest geometry has the exact cavity for the workpiece. To anticipate tolerances, you can define offsets - either globally or for each single support element individually.

Add standard elements

5
You can add additional features to the fixture like standard clamps, text labels or various hole types. To position all these add-ons, you simply pick points in the user interface or define coordinates and detailed characteristics in the panel.

Download ready-to-print files

6
After the designing process is finished, the fixture model can be downloaded in .STL file format which is ready to print. Additionally, you can download a 2D drawing providing assistance for the final assembly of the physical fixture.
